Weekly Progress #8

While the main focus for the last week of this last week was supposed to be AI placement and control I may or may not have gotten distracted improving the graphics a little bit. I think we can agree though, that it was worth it.

There is now a sun and a moon, circling around the plane of the world, with some of the world generation tweaked  to account for how the sun actually illuminates and warms the ground.

The moon, however, glows with it's own baleful green light. It slowly circles the world above the rim mountains. Many believe that the moon is cursed, and that the lands near the rim of the world are filled with monsters and demons due to its influence.

(The nebula skybox isn't in the current build, as it's currently mingled with the Pop Interaction changes noted below)

AI

Pretty pictures aside, I did actually manage to get around to some AI work. Currently the only AI placed in the world are simple tribes, lacking the sort of cohesive political structures to form into an empire like yours (AI empires will come later). They are mostly concerned with survival, and will allocate their pops appropriately.

The portrait borders for Pops are now colored based on their owning empire, to better differentiate between your own and foreign pops.

Hunting, and Settlements

Along with the AI changes, I've also added wild pigs which can be hunted for food. In the future you'll also be able to domesticate them, but for right now just hunting. There will be more animals added as well once I find appropriate assets.

Settlements can now claim additional regions as well, expanding the area they can utilize.

Pop Interactions

The last piece of work is still in progress. Pop interactions will allow your pops to directly interact with foreign pops. This presently has 3 options, but a 4th will be added when wild animal AI are added. The current options are:

  • Assimilate - convince the foreigner to join your empire
  • Attack - try to kill the foreigner
  • Expel - try to force the foreigner to move

These options will give you basic tools to be able to interact with the AI tribes. But be careful, for they can also use them against you.

Pop interactions are ordered similarly to normal pop control.

Simply drag one of your pops to an adjacent foreign pop, and choose the option you want.

The mechanics still need to be implemented, as well as some UI showing the targets of current interactions, but I expect that to all be wrapped up in the next couple of days.

What's Next

After pop interactions are finished up, I'll be going back to hunting and adding more animals. Then taking care of a bunch of small tweaks and quality of life features that have been accumulating. You can always check the Gitlab issue board for a more clear snapshot of what I'm working on and what I have planned.

Ah, distractions! Don't worry, everyone gets distracted -- some [such as myself] more often than others.
